My Columbus Day Weekend Checklist

Image from unconfirmedbreakingnews.com

Yes, I realize that it’s wrong to celebrate a man like Columbus.  I know that he committed genocide to the indigenous people of various “New World” locales.  However, there is one reason while I will always be grateful that he sailed to North America on The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria…we all get a long weekend!

For many college students, like myself, Columbus Day weekend generally means heading home to see friends and family that you might not have see since school started.

I’m taking full advantage of the weekend by…

Watching some great football.

Football season is officially in full swing, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!  I’m kicking my weekend off on Saturday by watching my personal favorite team, the BSU Bears, take on the Coastguard Academy.  If you’re interested, you can tune into the game too and watch me and the BSN team broadcast the game live on bsubears.com!  Kickoff is at 12 noon.  Then, on Sunday, is one of the most hotly-anticipated games of the NFL season…Pats vs. Jets.  I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be glued to my TV cheering for Brady and Co.

Reading a (non school-related) book.

I don’t know about you, but I just get really bored reading all the required material for my classes.  Especially my research methods class where I have to read upwards of 40 scholarly articles for my final project.  So, this weekend will be a nice opportunity to get away from academic writing and read something that I want to read.  I think I’ll bring home Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M. by Sam Wasson.  It’s all about the making of the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s and all the players involved.  My mom gave it to me for my birthday, and it really seems interesting.

Playing with my pets.

When I’m at school, there’s definitely a few creature comforts from home that I miss.  But I also really miss my creatures!  The other day, I was really missing my cat.  But then, my dad sent me an audio recording of her purring, and then he video-chatted me with her.  It was awesome, but not quite like actually cuddling with her.  Long story short, I can’t wait to see my pets!

Pumpkin bread, pumpkin bread, pumpkin bread!

My mother’s pumpkin bread is literally the best food on earth.  It is beyond delicious.  I can’t wait to get home and basically gorge on the stuff.  I’ll be so happy!

Curling up in front of the fireplace.

Last night, my little brother made a fire in the fireplace and sent me a picture of it.  I was so jealous!  Fires are one of my favorite parts of fall and winter.  It’s going to be warm this weekend, but I still plan on having my brother make one.  It’s been really chilly here in Bridgewater all week, so thinking of sitting in front of the fire really keeps me warm inside.

What are some of the things you want to do with your long weekend?
