BSU Rallies Against Hate

On Thursday of last week, a student here at Bridgewater State University was assaulted because of her beliefs towards gay marriage.  Destinie Mogg-Barkalow was attacked because of a position piece she wrote in the student newspaper, The Comment.  You can read her article here.

Today, several organizations on campus including the GLBTA Pride Center, Social Justice League, BSU Occupy, Student Diversity Council, and AWARE joined hundreds of students, professors, faculty, and staff in rallying against this crime and to show that BSU does not stand for hate.  It was an amazing moment to be a part of and I am so proud to be a member of the campus community.

The rally started with a march across campus, and eventually ended up on the Boyden Hall quad where there was a podium was set up.  There were several inspiring speakers, and the crowd was respectful and engaged.  It was definitely one of the best things I have witnessed here in Bridgewater, and I am so glad that I was able to participate and stand up for equal rights.  It was incredible to see so many people in solidarity.

Below are some pictures of today’s events, and I think they speak for themselves.

Also, here’s a video my roommate took of the marchers:

There was a lot of media coverage of the event, so I’ll post links to those as I find them in later updates.

Boston Globe: Hundreds rally in support of student who was assaulted

Were you at today’s rally? Share your experiences below in the comments!

xoxo, Karoline

It truly amazing there are still people left in our society who feel this way.

Great work BSU in support of a “cause” that shouldn’t need any in an enlightened world.

    Love Dad
